My Slice of Life #1

My evening began just as any other. When I got home from class I was startled to find that my electricity in my room had gone out. This was just what I needed after an exhausting day. Annoyed, I called the maintenance just wanting everything to be fixed so I could continue on with my day. When the maintenance man showed up I wasn't overly enthusiastic to see him. He began working on the apartment and soon after he began to make small talk. At first I wasn't really into it, but soon I began to ease up. Before I knew it, we had a full blown conversation going about our lives. After he fixed what he needed to and left, I realized how he had completely transformed. All it took was a complete stranger to lift my mood. It was then that I understood that life isn't about the things that you do, but the people that you have around you. It is about building relationships and having a genuine conversation with a complete stranger, not because you have to but because you want to. What I thought was a simple maintenance request, turned out to be the highlight of my day.

    Wow. I love how you had an unexpected aha moment. This post makes me think of a quote about strangers but I can't find it. I will keep looking!

A truly exceptional teacher

This week in my class I was reflecting on my experience in my cooperating teachers classroom. I thought about how I found myself day dreaming in the middle of my lesson, hoping one day someone would think of how good of a teacher I was, just as I was doing right then. It brought me back to the beginning of the year when I first walked into her classroom and immediately judged her. Her walls were bare, and the room was messy. She had no desk or formal place to call her own. I couldn’t believe she would want her room to look like that. Confide in Me

Today in my classroom one of my students confused in me a personal feeling that she was having. While it was nothing of serious matter, I knew that it was serious to her. Since I am only an intern in the classroom, I was a bit surprised that she felt comfortable enough to confide in me. This really made me realize how being genuine and real in the classroom really shows to the students. Your students should recognize you as the teacher, but also as someone who cares about them and their feelings. The fact that this little girl thought of me as someone she could trust, really made my heart smile. I hope that I can continue to be someone that students always feel safe to turn to for anything they may need. -Lauren

Hi! My name is Lauren Wagenhauser and welcome to my blog! I am currently a senior at Texas State University majoring in Elementary Education. I was born and raised in Bay City, Tx where I lived my entire life until I moved to San Marcos, Tx. Upon moving I have begun to see life in a completely new way outside of small little town. San Marcos has definitely given me some amazing memories, but being away from my family has really taken a toll on me.
